Umbanda is the unique Brazilian syncretic religion born in Rio de Janeiro over a century ago. Emerging from African cults of possessions it absorbed Spiritism of Allan Kardec, Catholic elements, Indian traditions, Hinduism, Buddhism and Kabbalah. Umbanda influenced daily life and culture of Brazilians in music, art, religion and cuisine.
American scholar Mel Alexenberg in his ‘Educating artists for the future’ concludes, ‘Umbanda reveals isomorphisms and similarities between so many cultures that it can be seen as exemplar of coexistence.’The exhibit is presented by Ticún Brasil, a Jewish volunteering guide to Brazil: ticunbrasil.com
